Lady Bruin Runner Maggie Kalafut (Daughter of Maura Kalafut) Signs With Dalton State
Dalton State cross country coaches have once again visited Tunnel Hill. This time, Margie Bruner and Andy Meyer returned with a letter of intent from a Lady Bruin athlete.
Bruner said Northwest Whitfield High School cross country and track star Maggie Kalafut has the athletic ability to be a key part of the Roadrunner’s first-ever team.
Although on the cross country team, she has also been a sprinter on the NWHS track team. “We are excited to see what Maggie can accomplish,” Bruner said. “I think she will improve so much as she concentrates more on distance.”
Meyer agreed. “I have watched her grow up,” he said. “She is a quality individual all around.”
Kalafut hopes to major in special education at Dalton State. “The school offered the major of my interest and I knew I definitely wanted to run in college,” she said. “Dalton State just had it all.”
Karafut was on the Daily Citizen-News all area team her junior year. In addition to running on the cross country team during all four years of high school, Kalafut was on the school’s swimming and track teams. She also received a United Way/Kiwanis Service Learning Award. Her best 5-k time is said to be 21:30.
“She’s a great kid,” said NWHS cross country coach Tom Sell. “I had her all four years and I can tell you she is a diamond in the rough,” he added.
“She is super, bubbly, athletic and built like a runner.”
Five of the seven seniors on Sell’s 2012-2013 teams have signed to continue their running careers in college. That includes twins Parker and Brody Cook. They signed with DS a week earlier.
Maggy is the daughter of Maura and Mike Kalafut. She has a sister and brother – Madeleine, 14, and Macavan, 16.
